(The Film)

Monozukuri: the people behind the craft.

(Overview)

Monozukuri explores the Japanese art of making through the people who give it meaning. A documentary we worked on at JK44 Films, it brings attention to the care, knowledge and commitment behind an object, and to the individuals whose work connects craft with a way of life.

Looking beyond the finished object.

Looking beyond the finished object.

(Perspective)

The story places people at the centre of craftsmanship. Rather than treating an object as the end of the story, Monozukuri invites a closer look at the thinking and experience behind it. Making becomes a way to understand the relationship between personal expression, practical purpose and attention to detail.

Our work on Monozukuri brought us together with Shinzo Tanuma, Tatsuya Kurosaka, Yoshinori Ueda, Rio Ueda and Shohei Nomura. Their contributions and individual perspectives are part of the film’s exploration of Japanese craftsmanship. We recognise each by name without reducing their work to a single idea of what an artisan should be.
