ROUGH: returning to the home of golf.

(Overview)

ROUGH is our second documentary at JK44 Films, exploring Scotland and the history of golf. It looks beyond the scorecard to the relationship between a game, the land it grew from and the culture that has carried it through generations. Scotland is not simply the setting. It is the starting point for understanding how golf became what it is today.

(Origins)

Golf’s Scottish history reaches back centuries. A parliamentary ban in 1457 is among its earliest written records, while the rules recorded at Leith in 1744 mark an important step towards the organised game. ROUGH places that history within a wider story of changing traditions, shared ground and a sport that travelled far beyond its beginnings.

The ground has a say in every shot.

(Scotland)

On Scotland’s links, wind, firm turf and uneven ground are part of the game. A ball follows the contours rather than a perfect script, and the same hole can ask a different question from one day to the next. ROUGH connects the history of golf to this landscape, considering why the game’s Scottish roots remain meaningful even as its reach has become global.
